  GENERAL INFORMATION

Burns Memorial Fund is the gift of Senator Patrick Burns - a successful rancher, businessman and philanthropist.  Senator Burns was an active and integral citizen of Calgary, contributing to the development of many of the City's institutions and charities. He was one of the “Big Four” – the four ranchers who organized the first Calgary Stampede. Senator Patrick Burns passed away in 1937, leaving this legacy for the children of Calgary.

Burns Memorial Fund is three funds (Fire, Police and Children) guided by the wishes of Pat Burns. In his Will, he directed financial support for widows and orphans of police officers and firefighters and poor children in Calgary. He asked that civic officials administer the three funds.

Today, Burns Memorial Fund trustees form a joint board to govern a private foundation and two non-profit trusts that deliver support to individuals and agencies in Calgary. We serve families of police officers, families of firefighters, and low-income children. We provide grants to individuals and community organizations. As Pat Burns did, we contribute to the education, health and wellness of young Calgarians.

If you or your organization feel you are eligible to apply for a grant you can see a full listing of our programs on the Programs page.

PLEASE NOTE

As of July 31, 2008 the Burns Memorial Fund will be accepting applications from low income families for help with school supplies, school fees, baby needs and medical/dental needs, only.   If possible we will provide funding, starting October, for winter clothing.  Therefore, if a family receives a grant in August or September they may return to the Burns Memorial  Fund in October to receive funding for winter clothing, if funds are available.
