High School Students


Burns Memorial Children’s Fund oversees the granting of bursaries and scholarships for Calgary high school students in financial need. Below is information on the opportunities available.

High School Bursary Program

This program is for Calgary high school students who are within two semesters of graduating from grade 12 and require financial assistance to continue their education. A basic living allowance is provided to assist students in covering expenses such as rent, food and transportation. Attendance and marks are monitored monthly. Students require a referral from their high school counsellor and are interviewed by our grants coordinator.

This program is partially funded by United Way of Calgary and Area, and the Ruth Ramsden-Wood Education Fund.

High School Diploma Preparation Assistance

This program is for students requiring financial assistance with costs related to registering for diploma preparation courses. Please submit applications at least two weeks prior to the course start date.

Senator Patrick Burns Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to high school students who seek assistance with post-secondary training or educational expenses. Scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to the successful students who are experiencing financial challenges.

The scholarship is open to high school students residing only in Calgary who are 21 years of age or under. They must be graduating in June 2017 and have plans to pursue post-secondary education in the coming fall (September 2017). To apply, applicants must submit a completed application form along with a counsellor recommendation form.

This program is partially funded by the Integro Legacy Fund.

Inspiring Futures Scholarships

EducationScholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to young mothers who are planning to build successful futures for themselves and their children through post-secondary education.

Scholarships are not limited to students currently in high school. Applicants must be 24 years of age or under, and reside in Calgary. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be expecting to attend post-secondary education in the coming fall (September 2017).

This program is offered by the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Calgary and Area.
